10 Essential Tips for Preparing Your Car for Transport

Transportation

Shipping your vehicle can be a seamless experience when you take the right steps to prepare.

Whether you're relocating, purchasing a car from another state, or attending a distant auto show, ensuring your vehicle is ready for transport is crucial.

Here's a comprehensive guide to help you through the process:

1. Clean Your Vehicle Thoroughly

Begin by washing your car's exterior. A clean surface allows both you and the transport driver to inspect and document any existing damages accurately. This step is vital for comparison upon delivery.

2. Document Your Car's Condition

After cleaning, take clear, dated photographs from multiple angles, capturing any pre-existing scratches, dents, or other imperfections. Additionally, record the current mileage by photographing the odometer. These records serve as essential references in case of disputes.

3. Remove Personal Items

Auto transport companies typically do not cover personal belongings inside the vehicle. It's advisable to remove all items to prevent potential loss or damage. Moreover, unsecured items can move during transit, causing interior damage.

4. Secure or Detach Accessories

Remove or firmly secure any external accessories like bike racks, luggage carriers, or spoilers. Retract or detach antennas and fold in side mirrors to prevent damage during loading and unloading.

5. Perform Basic Maintenance Checks

  • Fluid Leaks: Inspect for any leaks and address them beforehand. Significant leaks might lead the transport driver to refuse your vehicle.

  • Battery and Tires: Ensure the battery is fully charged and securely mounted. Verify that tires are properly inflated to facilitate safe loading and unloading.

6. Limit Fuel Level

Maintain your fuel tank at about a quarter full. This amount is sufficient for loading and unloading while keeping the vehicle's weight down during transport.

7. Deactivate Toll Tags and Alarms

Remove or deactivate toll tags to prevent unnecessary charges during transit. Ensure any alarm systems are disabled to avoid accidental activations, which can be a nuisance during transport.

8. Prepare Necessary Documentation

Gather all required documents, such as your vehicle's registration, proof of insurance, and any other paperwork the transport company might need. Having these readily available can streamline the process.

9. Verify Insurance Coverage

Confirm that your vehicle is insured during transit. While reputable transport companies carry insurance, it's prudent to understand the extent of coverage and consider additional insurance if necessary.

10. Communicate Special Instructions

If your vehicle has any quirks or requires specific handling, inform the transport company in advance. Clear communication ensures that the handlers are prepared and can take necessary precautions.

By meticulously following these steps, you can ensure a smooth and secure transport experience for your vehicle.

Proper preparation not only safeguards your car but also provides peace of mind throughout the shipping process.
